Diesel Truck PM – Trailer PM – Equipment PM
Preventive Maintenance
Preventive maintenance (PM) can keep your diesel trucks running smoothly and minimize the need for expensive repairs. Mobile Wrench can perform all the preventive maintenance your diesel trucks, trailers and equipment will need, including inspections, greasing, oil and other fluid changes, as well as filter changes. As we perform inspections, we will flag any potentially serious issues so that you can address them before they turn critical. This will keep your fleet running efficiently, minimize downtime, and help you avoid failed inspections that can lead to expensive fines and sideline your vehicles.
Services We Offer
Mobile Wrench offers a wide range of diesel truck, trailer and equipment preventive maintenance services.
Preventive Maintenance-A (PM-A) Service
PM-A, often called “Dry PM,” involves most inspecting the unit and maintenance tasks short of changing filters and fluids. It typically includes greasing of the chassis and components, fluid level checks, inspection of all hoses and belts, pressure checks and inflation of all tires, and lug torque on all wheels. These services are often recommended about halfway between your PM-B appointments. However, our mobile onsite maintenance team can customize the procedure to fit your internal protocols for maintenance and inspection, as well as making sure your trucks pass DOT inspections.
Preventive Maintenance-B (PM-B) Service
PM-B, often called “Wet PM,” typically includes all the services included in PM-A as well as changing oil, oil filters, fuel filters, and air filters. As with PM-A, we will customize the procedure to fit with your internal maintenance protocols. In addition, we will recommend any additional service that your equipment might need to avoid breakdowns or failed inspections.
Hydraulic System Preventive Maintenance
Many diesel trucks include hydraulic systems for specific applications. A claw for automated trash collection, a powered cherry picker for tree or line maintenance, and hydraulic kneelers for buses and trucks are just a few examples. These systems also require preventive maintenance. It’s essential to check the hydraulic oil, rods, seals, pipes, connections, pumps, and motors. The proper maintenance schedule for these components depends on the equipment on your machine.
Exhaust System Maintenance
Modern diesel trucks have sophisticated exhaust systems designed to control emissions. Improper function of these systems can significantly impact the performance of the diesel truck, leading to overheating, a loss of power, a loss of fuel efficiency, or improper emissions that can lead to failed inspections. Our mobile technicians know how to perform routine preventive maintenance on the exhaust systems and assess their condition to help your fleet keep functioning efficiently while limiting emissions to the allowed levels.
Benefits of Mobile Preventive Maintenance
Going to a shop for diesel truck PM can be full of hassles that can be more than a nuisance: it can interfere with your business. Instead of taking your trucks to a shop for maintenance, mobile diesel truck preventive maintenance might work better for you because:
- You keep vehicles on your site
- You don’t have to pay for a tow
- Your trucks aren’t down for as long
- You can schedule maintenance when convenient
- You will work with qualified mechanics
- You won’t skip maintenance
- You’ll get inspections to ensure compliance
Your diesel truck is one of your business’ most valuable assets, so you might not want to let it out of your sight. With mobile preventive maintenance, mechanics come to you, and you can monitor what’s going on with your truck. This means you won’t have to pay to tow your truck to the shop if it’s not running.
You can also avoid downtime on your truck by keeping it on site. When mobile preventive maintenance comes to work on your truck, they will really work on it then. It won’t just sit on the shop’s lot all day while the shop handles higher-priority clients or repairs. Taking your diesel trucks to the shop means they will get maintenance when it’s convenient for the shop. Getting mobile maintenance means they will get maintenance when it’s convenient for you.
When you take your diesel truck to the shop for preventive maintenance, there is always the risk that it will be given to the most junior mechanic to handle. It’s just maintenance, after all. With mobile preventive maintenance, the mechanic that comes out will be highly skilled.
With the hassle of taking your diesel truck to the shop, you are tempted to skip it. When mechanics come to you, you will get the maintenance, which will help you keep costs down. Since the mechanic is qualified to perform regular inspections, you can help keep your fleet in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations so that you avoid fines and OOS violations.
Why Preventive Maintenance Is Important
Diesel truck, trailer and equipment preventive maintenance is a good investment that can help keep your operating costs down and your reliability up. Whether you have just one workhorse vehicle that does everything for your business or an entire fleet, here’s how preventive maintenance can improve your profitability and productivity.
Keep Vehicles on the Road Longer
When you perform preventive maintenance on your diesel trucks, you help them stay on the road longer. Greasing the chassis helps head off rust and wear. Rotating tires avoids uneven wear so that vehicles operate more efficiently, maneuver better, and are less likely to have a flat. Changing the oil reduces engine wear and maintains efficient operation. Keeping vehicles on the road longer means you don’t have to replace your vehicles as often, which saves expenses and improves profitability.
Avoid Breakdowns
Diesel truck preventive maintenance is the best way to avoid breakdowns. It protects your vehicles, and inspections will detect potential problems early so that you can deal with them when it’s most convenient.
Vehicle breakdowns can be damaging to your business. Not only do you suddenly have to fix the vehicle, but you have to figure out some way to do the work that you were counting on the truck to accomplish. Renting a replacement vehicle can be expensive, inconvenient, and may not serve your purposes as well. Putting off vital deliveries or services can cost you money and goodwill – you can lose clients if you don’t fulfill your obligations.
Maintain Fuel Efficiency
Fuel prices can impact your bottom line significantly when you are operating even one diesel truck, let alone a fleet. Another thing that can impact your bottom line is if your vehicles burn more fuel than necessary. Poor maintenance can reduce a vehicle’s fuel efficiency by 10% or more, which adds up to a lot of money when you look at all the fuel you burn over the course of the year.
Avoid Accidents
In an ideal world, all drivers will follow the rules, and you would never need to slam the brakes or steer around a car that pulled out in front of your truck. However, in the real world, your trucks need well-maintained brakes, good tire tread, and tuned steering to avoid accidents.
Accidents may cost you more than the price of fixing your vehicle: you can be liable for the cost of property damage and injury to others. If it comes out that poor vehicle maintenance contributed to the accident, you may be liable for more of the costs – you may even have to pay punitive damages.
Pass Inspections
Your diesel trucks have to pass regular inspections on the highway. Unfortunately, one in five roadside inspections results in out-of-service (OOS) violations: these make it illegal for you to operate your vehicle on the highway, with the potential for serious fines as well. You can avoid most of the common OOS violations with routine maintenance.
Improve Resale Value
Some businesses run their diesel trucks into the ground. Others operate their trucks while they are new since they require fewer repairs and are more efficient, then sell them in the middle of their lifespan. If your business wants to sell your diesel trucks for revenue, then preventive maintenance makes sense. A good record of diesel truck PM will allow you to price your vehicle higher and sell it faster.

Diesel Truck PM FAQs
How does preventive maintenance lower the costs of operating diesel trucks?
Diesel truck preventive maintenance can lower the costs of operation by:
- Maintaining fuel efficiency
- Avoiding breakdowns
- Avoiding accidents
- Passing inspections
- Extending the life of vehicles
- Improving resale value
Fuel cost is one of the main components of your diesel truck operating costs. Without proper maintenance, your fuel costs can increase by 10% or more.
Breakdowns can also be expensive. This includes the cost of the repairs and the cost of renting a replacement vehicle as well as any loss in customer goodwill if you can’t deliver services or goods.
Accidents are expensive. You not only have to pay for the cost of repairs to your vehicle, but you might also have to pay to repair other vehicles involved in the accident. With poor maintenance, your liability might be higher.
Failed inspections can lead to expensive fines and may even put your vehicle out of service. Most failed inspections are due to issues that maintenance will typically handle.
Preventive maintenance can extend the life of your vehicle, which means you can get more value out of it before you have to buy a replacement.
Finally, if you decide to sell your diesel truck either to get operating cash or as part of your normal procedures, you can sell it for more if you performed proper maintenance.
What diesel truck preventive maintenance services do you offer?
Mobile Wrench offers a full range of maintenance services, including:
- Diesel truck PM-A (dry PM)
- Diesel truck PM-B (wet PM)
- Hydraulic preventive maintenance
- Exhaust preventive maintenance
- Liftgate preventive maintenance
- Trailer preventive maintenance
If you have a particular maintenance service that you need, we can tailor our maintenance program to meet your internal recommendations and guidelines. If you need something unusual, just call and ask – the odds are that we can do it.
How often should I service my diesel trucks?
Every truck manufacturer has recommendations for their particular vehicle. Follow these recommendations. For light-duty trucks, you might need wet PM as frequently as every 3000 miles. For heavy-duty vehicles, the recommended schedule might be as long as every 20,000 miles. Typically, dry PM should be performed halfway between each wet PM.
Does my diesel truck need maintenance if it is sitting idle?
Not necessarily. If you properly prepare your diesel truck for sitting idle, it can sit idle for more than 12 months without maintenance. However, the truck will need to be prepared for operation before use.
If you want your diesel truck to be ready for operation at any time, you should follow manufacturer’s guidelines for maintenance even if the truck is idle.
